Where to Eat in Middlesbrough: Turtle Bay’s New Menu

Caribbean food and cocktail venue Turtle Bay have recently revamped their Middlesbrough menu, adding scrumptious sharing plates, an all new burger range and more vegan options across the board. I always love the vibe in Turtle Bay, Middlesbrough. They can make you completely forget you’re in the North East, let alone the fact it’s -2 outside right now. The ethos behind this Caribbean kitchen is inspired by island life – it’s about grazing, socialising or grabbing a working lunch, a chance to escape from the grind and embrace Turtle Bay’s beach shack experience.

And if the longing of summer wasn’t enough to get you to visit this venue, the launch of their brand new menu just might!

Along with four new One Pot curry dishes, Turtle Bay have added a brand new burger range, including the Smoking Goat Burger (bet you’ve never seen that on a menu before?) and the ultimate carnivore choice, the
Shack Stack. An indulgent burger stack where beef meets jerk pork belly.

They’ve also added to their sides and small plates menu, creating more diversity and exceptions Caribbean flavours. They come as two for £5.40, three for £8, four for £10 or five for £12. The options include Grilled Jerk Halloumi, Curried Chick Peas, Chilli Pineapple Salad and the brand new Coconut Callaloo. Callaloo is a Caribbean green leaf similar to spinach and in this dish is creamed with coconut milk – and entirely vegan too.

The sides and sharers would be lush alongside some of Turtle Bay’s new cocktails too. I tried the Tingaling – gin, prosecco, elderflower and grapefruit. A super refreshing, light little number that will make you pine for the sun on your face and the sand in your toes. 

We decided to share a couple of starters and then dive into one of the latest additions to the One Pot menu for the main event. 

The Garlic and Chilli Pit Prawns were beautifully marinated and had a fiery little kick. They’re whole and shell-on but absolutely worth the mess that you end up getting in. They came with small chunks of roti bread that was also soaked in the spicy marinade – a winning touch.

I personally can’t go to Turtle Bay without getting the Sweetcorn Fritters either, one of their classic side or starter dishes. They’re like a sweet, less chunky, onion bhaji. Packed full of flavour, they’re served with West Indian hot sauce and absolutely delicious.

New to the party, the Grilled Jerk Halloumi is an absolute must! The salty cheese, the chargrilled taste from the grill and just enough jerk seasoning to compliment it.

Our main course choices consisted of the brand new Curry Salmon and the Aubergine Curry. Slow cooked and spicy, the One Pot menu is perfect for embracing the Caribbean food culture. 

The Curry Salmon was a lovely, light coconut curry with a subtle hint of chilli and plenty of ginger. There was an abundance of salmon which I was thrilled about – big, chunky yet flaky fillets. Both curries were served with steamed rice and roti bread. 

If you’ve had the Curry Goat before here at Turtle Bay Middlesbrough, you’ll know about those delightful Caribbean dumplings that it’s served with. They don’t come with any other One Pot dish but you can order them as a side. Chuck a couple in your curry and leave them to soak before diving in – you will not regret it.

The new menu is perfect for uniting foodies, whether they be veggies and vegans or insatiable carnivores. Expanding the options and creating more diversity in their offering, Turtle Bay offer something for everyone.
