It’s been all over your social media feed for weeks. But if you’re yet to visit The Woodmans Arms, Whickham, why on earth not?
Before we get into the good stuff, I was invited to the launch of the new outdoor terrace where I got to enjoy food and drinks for free and as part of the goodie bag, there was some complimentary credit given so I could return another again to wine and dine in exchange for some social coverage.
But I think you need the full low down in a blog post.
The recently refurbished country pub is located in the leafy Gateshead town of Whickham, surrounded by valleys and woodland. And being incredibly dog-friendly, it’s the perfect area for walking and grabbing a post-trek pint or some scran.
As you enter, you walk through a newly-built terrace that’s quirky, creative and decorated generously with twinkly lights as well as a huge roaring fire place. On your right, you’ll also spot the ‘Grain Tank’. A private hire facility built with corrugated iron and adorned with bright graffiti.
Each of the terrace tables has beer tap, giving you the option to buy a keg, plonk yourself down and not need to move for an entire afternoon. The outdoor area is well heated with both the fire and electric too, so it can still be enjoyed despite already waving goodbye to the summer weather.
There’s also a big vintage box full of blankets at the entrance of the pub too, should that autumn chill start to get too much.
Inside, the eye for interior continues. Retaining the warmth and cosyness of a good country pub, they’ve modernised it just enough to feel fresh. The lighting is somewhat atmospheric, lots of dim amber tones – I told you, COSY!
The first time we visited, we sat outside and enjoyed gin cocktail trees and a variety of their dishes in including the award-winning fish and chips and a couple of different burgers.
The menu is a good mix of classic pub grub and slightly more refined dishes.
Apparently their pies are also winners of awards and highly rated. We didn’t get chance to try one, but luckily @Geordie.Scran has us covered…

𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚆𝙾𝙾𝙳𝙼𝙰𝙽𝚂 𝙰𝚁𝙼𝚂 🥧 🐟 🥬 🍹 ⠀ #invited #gifted #ad .⠀ Spent a wonderful evening at @the_woodmans_arms last night for some amazing food and drinks. ⠀ .⠀ Since first visiting in the summer I’ve been so eager to come back and sample more of their expansive menu. ⠀ .⠀ 𝙵𝙾𝙾𝙳 🍽 ⠀ For starter we shared the black pudding tart with poached egg, peppercorn sauce and pancetta 🤤👌🏻 honestly?! It was THE BEST starter I think I’ve had since I started this page – and I don’t normally eat black pudding!⠀ .⠀ Mains – fatha scran went for the Guinness steak pie which was absolutely UNREAL. No wonder it’s award winning! Fat chunks of steak which melted in the mouth in the most amazing pastry 🥧 ⠀ I went for the seabass with cherry tomatoes on a bed of the most delicious greens. Lush!⠀ .⠀ Dessert, fatha was too stuffed from the pie but I seem to have a second stomach when it comes to cake! I demolished the sticky toffee pudding with toffee ice cream 🤤😍 To. Die. For. ⠀ .⠀ All washed down with a summertime spritz! Fab! 🍹 . 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙿𝙻𝙰𝙲𝙴 🏠 If you haven’t been to @the_woodmans_arms then I can’t recommend it enough. So beautifully decorated and wonderfully cosy interior with an incredible garden area. . The staff can’t be faulted, super helpful and friendly making you feel right at home. . .
On my second visit, we took Jax for Sunday Lunch. If you take a pooch and want to sit inside, you can only sit in the bar bit. And you can’t reserve a table in there.
I’d head there super early, or a little later in the day. We arrived at around 4.00pm and only just managed to get seated. They serve until 7.00pm on a Sunday, which is pretty good as we prefer a roast later in the day and not many places keep their kitchen open so late.
Another reason to head to The Woodmans Arms early would be for the sides. There’s some proper scrumptious sounding sides on the menu, including savoy cabbage with pancetta, cauliflower cheese and even mushy peas – another rarity! Unfortunately, out of all of the sides, there was only mashed potato left.
Yep, that’s right. Literally the ONLY thing I could slightly mark our lunch down for was that mash didn’t come as standard on the lunch. Don’t get me wrong, the price of the lunch + a side of mash doesn’t exactly break but it’s a staple. It’s not a Sunday roast with it!
And if, for some reason, they didn’t have any of that left too I’d be pretty sad about it.
Other than that, it was pretty faultless. I got the Slow Roasted Beef Brisket which was absolutely delicious, and so tender. But it was a hard decision! They have quite the selection of meat to choose from including pork loin, chicken breast, lamb shoulder, leg of lamb, sirloin beef, beef brisket or gammon. Something for everyone.
We actually stayed long after we’d finished our meals. It’s such a lush little spot, it was so easy to chill and share a bottle of red with lovely company. Plus, we could take Jaxxy which will always make it more appealing for me.
And I really need to go back and try that pie…
Let me know if you’ve paid The Woodmans Arms Whickham a visit. And don’t forget to let me know what you ordered too!
Lots of love, LB x
